image stitching (panorama shots)

I've been experimenting with the image stitching with varying results. Sometimes images are lighter or darker than the neighbouring image - this causes the image stitching seam to show clearly. Perhaps there's an experienced image stitcher out there that has a good suggestion on how much the images should overlap for best results. Sometimes tall buildings are distorted and show 'ghost' structures at varying angles.
  • I haven't experimented with this much... but I'd like to. Are you using the panorama scene mode to take your shots for stitching? I think this locks the exposure such that they photos should match up. Although I think it can only be used to shoot photos along one vertical or horizonal row...
Would be very interested in seeing your results anyway.

    ATHANASIOS asked:

Hello!!!! I bought my new canon s 95 a few days ago and i am verry happy about it...Nevertheless,I have not yet understood how does the panorama mode really work...For example I take 3 photos in a row using the panorama mode...Then does the software of canon do alla the rest???after stitching the photos with the software I will have a good panorama photo?Cause my previous camera was a sony and i had the mode sweep panorama and everything was easier...

The S95 has a useful tool in SCN mode called stitch assist, where you have the choice of 'stepping' from left to right or right to left. With the first shot, the camera auto-exposes and memorises the settings for use in every subsequent shot (I have noticed occasional slight variances though). You then reposition the camera using the previous image as a reference. (Now here is where I am still trying to optimise the overlap and perhaps somebody out there has a good tip) With 'some' overlap you take the next shot and so on, until you have covered the area you want, up to 360 degrees. The actual stitching is done with supplied software on your computer. I shall try and post some of my results for you to study - need to figure out how this is done, watch this space.

I love image stitch, but the results can vary quite a bit. If the subject is moving (i.e. waves, shadows, clouds), the stitch never looks that good. I think the best way to get a good stitch is to make sure you pre-focus the camera on a similar spot as you pan and take your multiple shots. If one shot is pre-focused on something far away and dark, and as you pan you pre-focus on something that is near and light, you will not get good results. Here are a few of my better panoramas:

I try to shoot a panorama, but dont use the SCN Mode for that, i shoot out of the hand. I know, i need more work for a good one. I use ICE from Microsoft, very good for Panorama Shots.

    Thanks everyone!
@monsterallan - Actually the top two were taken with my old camera. (But the stitch assist procedures are pretty much identical) My old camera is a Canon SD890. It's actually not that great of a camera. It takes good images as long as the light is perfect. I was pretty disappointed with the SD890, so that is why I got the S95. I can't wait to do some more trips this summer and experiment more with the S95.

  • prfstrkr, Great shots this last one makes good use of the panarama, its cool when the spots in the sky are birds and not dust on the sensor.

    From Pittsburgh July 2011

Here's a panaroma of Pittsburgh, PA. Used ICE to put them together. First one I made, so the framing is off a little. This is around 120 degrees of view. Shot from the top of the Duquesne Incline at Mt. Washington, at the confluence of the Monongahela, Allegheny, and Ohio Rivers. First time I've tried posting here, so the pic is a little small.
