Black and white photos. Post away!

Well, sometimes... photos look better, or convey a stronger impression when it's in black&white (greyscale actually) Here's a few I took and why I think It looks better in black and white...

minum petang (or 'tea time' in english) -M, ISO80, F/4.9, ss1/200, fl 22mm
    minum_petang
    - Lacked colour (the background sky was dull anyway)
    - Punch out the silhouette up a notch

bravery (or foolishness?) - a lady selling grapes in the middle of the road. -M, ISO80, F/8, ss1/50, fl 18mm
    bravery
    - Too many distracting colours at the back
    - Better isolate the subject from the background

    "phew, u smell like a buffalo!" -M, ISO80, F/4.5, ss1/250, fl 18mm
    sapa_bnw_03
    - Same colour all over (brown)
    - So I'd rather concentrate on the lighting contrast to make the forms more pronounced.

    water taxi -C, ISO80, F/5.6, ss1/80, fl 10mm
    hlb_06
    - Background vs subject
    - Ok, the boat was greyish, and overwhelmed by water (which was bright green, reflecting the vegetation) So i converted it to b&w so that they don't fight so much...

That's it for today. Hope you guys can add more to this thread (and share tips on this topic)

    Thanks!

Hello again! On to today's posts...

    rustic charm -M, ISO80, F/3.2, ss 1/125, fl 11mm
    old quarter
    -highlighting silhouettes and sunflare

    mosque in hanoi -M, ISO80, F/4.9, ss 1/125, fl 22mm
    a mosque in hanoi
    -same here, focusing on forms

    university -Av, ISO100, F/3.5, ss 1/159, fl 13mm
    1st university in vietnam
    - this photo had intense colours (but I wanted to focus on the details instead)

    mudhouse -P, ISO80, F/2.5, ss 1/403, fl 7mm
    mud house
    - rigid man-made house against organic textures of nature

ok, that's it for today! :)

Hi there, liking the blk and whithe pic's. Would you be able to set in what program you are using each time, I think that could be very useful. Keep up the good work..

Hi Bjorg. You can customise two settings on your s95 (M and C modes. Av, Tv and P follows your last settings) and if you want to change more, its not that hard to do :) ... however, I do my black and white conversions in post. (for more options and better control)
  • Really great stuff, syf! Enjoy looking at them.

I think I like the tones of the mudhouse, water taxi, and buffalo best. Some of the others look a little overexposed with areas of pure white. This might only be something that bothers me though.

The shot of the grape seller is an awesome street candid. I love the foot holding up the bike. I wonder if you used Tv (shutter priority) mode to lengthen the exposure time and blur the background more?

    Thanks solarshooter...

Yes, I noticed the blown-out highlights too. I know there's some limitation for this camera but the fact that the sky was overcast most of the time when I was in Hanoi doesn't help either... haha. Any ideas how to counter this? I mean in some situations, I can't help it If I want to get details in the foreground elements. Hmmm... I'm thinking of buying some filters. :)

Ah, for the 'lady selling grapes' photo, I used M mode for this. She stayed at the same spot for quite some time (in fact she was still there when I left after about 5mins), so I had time for a few shots... The shutter speed wasn't that slow 1/50. But since the weather was super hot, (I used ISO80 and F8) thats about the slowest I can use. Luckily the traffic was flowing good (around 40-60kmph) so I got a bit of blur!

Oh, I just figured one thing. My monitor at work (where I edited these pics) is calibrated to cater for printouts (so its a lot dimmer) That might be why the whites are too white also... I'll check again what they look like on my home monitor... Haha, funny how I failed to notice before...

*p.s: Oh, Bjorg... I read your comment again; and realised that I misinterpreted the whole thing! (Sorry, English is not my 1st language) haha. Anyways, I'll be sure to update the settings later... thanks.
  • I've been shooting most of the time in P mode with the EV (exposure compensation) almost always a notch or two to the negative side. This is of course just a personal preference, but I find that I like the look of the slightly darker exposure better. The results feel more like when I shoot 35mm color film. (Which I'd be doing more of the time, if it wasn't so expensive to process and print!)
  • Ok, this one is not my usual fare at all, but I thought I'd have some fun with B&W. Deliberately abstract technomekanoptiks post-processed for that extra vintage look (including some added "grain").

Thanks for the kind words, solarshooter... btw, in that last photo of yours. What is... nevermind... (haha)

    Ok, I shot this today...

    shapes & lines - M, ISO80, F/5.6, ss 1/500
    RP_2
The basic shapes and forms caught my interest... (triangle, rectangle, cylinder...etc.)
That triangle is the roof of an MRT station... :)
  • Hi All, how do you shoot in black and white please or do you change it to B&W after you have taken the photo?

    Many thanks.
  • @LowLightSue: You can indeed shoot in black and white from one of the non-"Auto" modes by pressing FUNC/SET and then choosing BW from the color adjustment menu.

We often shoot in color, however, and then convert to B&W on the computer. Doing this in Photoshop gives you much more control over the greyscale tones. @syf wrote a great tutorial about how to do that here: http://s95site.com/forum/discussion/23/how-to-convert-to-black-white-photoshop/
  • thank you, have just looked, do you mean the Color Accent - keep only selected color and change other to B&W, so sorry to sound so dim but how does that make it black and white?

    Hello LowLightSue...
Not Color Accent. As solarshooter had mentioned, press FUNC.SET button, then find the color options (the icon looks like a paint squeeze tube) By default it should say 'OFF'. There, you can set the color mode to b&w...

oops, i think i might have upsampled this one a bit in processing it and reduced the quality... don't have enough time or care to fix though. :)

@jnw3 - nice one. I don't get what the writings imply, but awesome composition!
@jvw315 - a bit dark to see the details, but i like the laid-back, informal feel to it.
  • @jnw3, -- The anonymous figure is perfect. I think it's momentary juxtapositions like that that often turn a good photo into a great photo.

@jvw315 -- Also really nice. I actually kinda like the overexposed highlights here, it gives it a kinda "chilling out on a sunny day" feel. Nice film grainy look from a high ISO, though?

Your two screennames are a doozy, though.

  • Aloha, I am new to photography, new to the s95 (very pleased so far), and new to forums. have learned loads so far and getting inspired by some of the amazing images posted. I am still having trouble with colour settings in scene mode. When in portraits or landscape mode and I press func/set, the colour function icon is grey and I cannot access it. Can anyone advise? Thanks.

@barney - Hello. The scene modes are 'presets', so you can't change the color there. It is however, possible to replicate the settings with the custom modes. Try P mode instead...

I always find my b&w photos to be a bit on the 'flat' side. Out of all my photos, there are only 3 b&w that I like. And they have been edited.
    Trying black and white photography..

Ive read on many forums, that SOC b&w is hardly ever really good. I try different styles, but still dont come up with what I think would be great. I really dont know how other people do it. Sigh!

That's a very nice black & white there @Liliaku, I like the shadowing on this pic... very surreal... I'm waiting for that UFO to poke right out of the sky! lol.

@Babes, thank you for the photo compliment of my son... yeah, he has the power and definitely loves remotes! LOL! He's very smart for his 16 months of age... and I'm not saying that because I'm his dad, but because he already knew all of his ABC's and numbers 1-10 at 15 months. LOL!
