Canon S95 image quality still appears to be better than S100

I just checked the comparison on dpreview.com here - http://bit.ly/tCOy8w

When set to RAW, there doesn't appear to be much in it. In RAW at 3200 ISO the S100 looks like it has slightly more detail, but also appears to have been shot with a slighty longer focal length which may be the reason for that. But the S100 also appears to have more chroma noise that can be difficult to clean up.

When set the Jpg though, the S95 clearly offers better image quality. At 3200 ISO there's more detail in the S95 photo, even with less focal length. In comparison the S100 loses more visible detail, which by the look of it is caused by its noise reduction.

So for photos, the S95 still appears to be the better camera. Unless you're after the wider 24mm lens, or any of the other newer features the S100 offers.
  • Overall I would say the Canon S95 is excellent for the price and quality.I believe now in the USA it retails for 289.00 I believe or less so dollar for dollar I would recemmend. The new S100 I believe is about 150.00 more with a few more bells and whistles, better video, higher pixel.neutral density built in,better burst speed, more wide angle on the zoom.etc If these are not essential for someone I would pick the Canon S95 now seeing its on sale due to the release of the S100.Lately I tried the new Fuji X10.It felt more robust, metal housing, tad better picture with 2/3rds sensor size, despite I found the OVF annoying with lens barrel protruding when extended,no info in optical viewfinder, menus a pain to navigate, etc, just not what I expected for 599.00 so I returned a nd got my money back and my Canon S95 that was still at the shop.So really the Canon S95 at almost half the price of the Fuji X10 does the job and what I thought would be better was not.I think if anyone wants a small camera package the new release of the Sony Nex 7 will be the one as it has the same sensor as the Nikon D7000 and great electronic viewfinder, its getting great reviews but will cost about 1200 for the body and release date halted till after new year due to floods overseas.I cannot see myself investing the money into Sony Nex 7 and will just stick my little Canon S95 and my Nikon D700/300s and lens.Thought I would pass my experience on and I'm glad I have my S95 back and all my lensmate filters. Regards, Jim

to Glenn, s95 uses CCD sensor. s100 using CMOS.Hasselblad's uses CCD sensor for their latest h4d_200ms 200megapixel 40,000 USD camera. Other medium formet camera (i.e.Phase one,Leica S2, Mamiya, pantex645d) also using CCD rather than CMOS sensor. All these dslrs (all priced above 18000 usd)renouned for pics/colour quality not for vedio, frame/s. There is ill competion in full frame(1Dx MK 3,5dmk2,D3X) or lower APS-C/H sensor for vedio frame rate, which is suitable by CMOS. CMOS is using for saving camera cost. Just google "CCD vs CMOS" & "DSLR using CCD"
s100 is downgrade version of s95/s90. zoom, vedio frame rate is not a good option for a still cam.
I wish s105 will be like this
10mg px 1/1.7 CCD, 24mm prime lens, f 1.2-f 22, No vedio (if u want vedio, go for canon legeria or vixia, or sony Betacom).

Nikon D70 which can be had for 200 with lens used , uses a CCD.
I have the D70s which I bought new. The only issue I have with it is the sensor gets dusty very easily.
    Excellent camera for the WEB.
I bought my S95 last week on eBay for 275 USD new, and am looking forward to having it in my pocket on an upcoming holiday, with of course my Nikon in waiting.
PS..Im really impressed with following the S95 has and I like the cool idea of jail breaking this little pocker rocket in the future.

I have long time hesitated between the s100 and the s95.
Hd video and control of noise at high iso of the s100 were interesting for my use.
Some trials of the S100 that I could see, were not really convinced me.Comparisons between s95 and s100, often even made me prefer the s95.
In France, it is has been very little s100 imported, it is impossible to find in any store. And for the "lucky one" which find on there is a lot of warranty return, so I chose the s95 is a sure value.I do not regret my choice!

Out of interest Ken Rockwell has reviewed the S100. In a nutshell, in his opinion everything is slightly faster / better than the S95 operationally (which it should be being a newer camera) but crucially the real world picture quality is the same.
