  • The Canon PowerShot S95 isn't like other digital cameras. The S95 is the very best digital camera. Haven't tried them all, but I do think this is likely. The best that you can toss in your back pocket and whip out for an excellent shot at a moment's notice, at least.

I started this site because, as the S95 is the best pocket camera, S95 shooters tend to care about their photography. Thus the need for a place to swap tips and tricks on how to shoot better and get the most out of this tool. I hope you find S95site useful...

  • Just ordered my S95 yesterday. Should get it next week. Back in 2002-2004 I took 10,000 shots with my Sony 5Mb DSC F707. Haven't done much since, but I'm excited to get the new S95.
  • Great to have you here, goodtempo. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the S95. I've had it two or three weeks now and am loving it. My last camera was a clunky big zoom thing by Panasonic kinda like that Sony, which took great photos, but I'm a hundred times happier with a tiny camera that's easy to carry around. The big bulky kind can really discourage picture taking, I find.
  • Hi there,
I've ordered my S95 and should get it in 2 day's time. Can't wait!
It's an upgrade to my previous camera, the Canon Powershot A80, which has finally given up the ghost.
  • Hello, I've just bought an s95! I know there must be so much I can do with it, but I'm really clueless about settings and everything. I hope I can learn some great stuff on this site, and eventually be able to share my own tricks :)
  • in-laws just bought me on for my birthday. got some great shots already. cant wait to wake up tomorrow and take more.
  • So very glad to have you all here! Feel free to start threads, even if they're to show a cool photo and tell us about it.
  • Hi there - what a great idea this site is ! Last year I bought a Canon EOS 50D with some good quality lenses to replace my film SLR. It cost a fortune all up and it's quite big & heavy. Since getting my S95, the 50D has been kind of forgotten. I take the S95 everywhere and the pictures it takes are every bit as good as the SLR.
  • I am so glad I found this site! I'm very excited about my new S95, but I have lots of questions. I'll post my questions as they come up.

What can I say... I'm as stoked as everyone else is about this camera.
My S90 "wows" me every time I use it... I expect that the S95 will totally blow me away!
Looking forward to lots of show and tell.

  • Hi there, it is my birthday today and I have been bought the S95 :) - having recently read the NY Times - love letter to a camera I was sorely tempted to purchase this camera for myself. I already have the G9 which I absolutely adore and have taken 8000+ photos with it, my only minuses on this lovely camera is the size and the inability to take photos at concerts.

I am SO hoping that the S95 will address both these issues, I am off out tonight to a restaurant to celebrate my birthday and will report back with how the S95 handled the low light conditions, I am expecting great things!

I will also do a bit of videoing to see how it comes out :) cannot wait!

  • Sue: Happy Birthday! Please do report back, very interested pushing the S95's low light abilities in no-flash situations...

    Welcome to S95site, everyone!
  • I will post up some pics tomorrow, as it is now a little late and I am faltering with the 'getting started' manual already! can't see anywhere in it how to look to make sure I am on the best quality setting for my photos, some of the photos I took tonight are only 965kb, compared to 9mb for some I have just taken with my G9! - can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Of course, tomorrow, it may well all become much clearer to me :)

    Sue

ps thanks for the birthday wishes and I didn't use the flash once tonight!
  • I just bought an S95 to replace an S90 that I "lost" in Europe. I used the former camera for 9 months and loved it. I'm hoping to enjoy the increased functionality of the S95.
  • Hey gd, glad to have you here. Can I ask, did you lose the S90, break it, leave it behind? If it sustained any damage, I'm interested in hearing about how these models of camera fail. Most of my cameras bite the dust from daring photographical operations or experimentation gone awry, ha. If you want to start a thread even about anything you learned from the S90 even, I'm sure we'd all be interested...

Hello guys... (and girls) I'm Syf from Malaysia. Just bought my s95 last September, for a trip to Vietnam, and it proved to be a very neat little camera; very convenient to use. Hope i can learn a lot on this forum... see you around! :)

    Hello nak_out...
In flickr, go to the photo you want... Then there's a drop down menu labelled : share this... (click that) After that click >grab the HTML/BBCode, copy and paste that html code into your comment.
  • Hi Guys, I just came across this forum yesterday and was delighted to see that it all for the s95. I have had this camera for a month now and it still amazes me how such a small camera can give great results. I hope I can learn a few things on how to improve my limited photography skills from the collective wisdom of this forum.

Hello everyone, I'm really excited to find this site. I've only gotten my S95 this week and I'm really excited to learn how to get the most out of the camera. I'm certain this forum will be both educational and fun.
  • hi folks,

Got the s95 about 2-3 weeks ago, so I am still in the learning curve not only with regards to the camera, but digital photography in general.

I happen to stumble upon this site almost randomly yet it has been very helpful, and want to just say thank you!
  • this is a lovely website and I hope many new members find us in here :) I am recovering from an op so am unable to leave the house at the moment, SO frustrating with all this lovely snow laying around in North Hampshire. Still very excited about using my S95!
  • Hi all! What a great site - thanks for making it :) I just got my S95 a week ago and am loving it so far. I did print photography in the 90's with a Minolta SLR, but haven't used anything but basic point-and-shoot digitals until now. I'm having a great time!
  • I'm trying to keep quiet in this thread, but again: a big welcome to all new members, very glad to have you here!

@LizardOfDoom - I love shooting film more than anything, but it's just so material and $$ intensive. The S95 is a great way to go minimalist in terms of carrying around stuff, while still retaining all the photographic control...

Hi everybody, Thank you all for sharing your questions and answers with us all. I saw some very interesting things by now and already learned one or two things on the S95. It is the best p&s camera I ever owned and it will replace my old lady (300D).
  • Hi! I'm new on here, so glad I stumbled on to this site. I saw a link on one of the reviews on youtube... I think, idk i forgot.. Anyway I actually haven't got my S95 yet my hubby got me the SD1400 bundle at bestbuy last minute for Christmas because it "looked like the camera I wanted" LMAO he is so clueless. Anyway can u believe they charged him $331 for that camera bundle- ridiculous. The S95 is on sale for $370 now so I can't wait to exchange it tomorrow!!! :D

Hello from PL! Bought my S95 (plus 2 additional batteries LOL) four weeks ago so it's time to be more serious about digital photography now:) I've been using a couple of p&s cameras in the past but always in that damn Auto/SCN mode so every picture looked almost the same and I mean really bad:) I've spent last two weeks studying all the basics about ISO,aperture, shooter speed, white balance, deep of field, lenses, composition etc and it's amazing how much you can improve your pictures quality if you know how to setup your camera properly!:) I'm glad I've found this site!
  • @stst - We've enjoyed your contributions as well. Can't wait to see a stop motion from you...

    @xoxojontue - I think you'll be _very_ pleased with the S95!

@Radzio - I agree! My experience with 35mm film in an old SLR accounts for most of my digital photography know-how.

Hi - I live in England and have listed photography as a hobby for more than 50 years. I don't claim to be an expert - many of my shots are just records of the moment rather than carefully composed pictures - but I have owned many different cameras over the years - just about every type you can imagine - and understand the subject pretty well. However, I can honestly say that I've never looked forward to a new camera more than the S95 that I have just ordered. It has to be one of the most exciting all-round cameras ever made. I've always been a Canon fan and currently have an EOS 20D SLR with some nice lenses, plus an Ixus 80is, as a 'go-anywhere'. After reading the great reviews of the S95 I have decided to treat myself and replace the Ixus. Best price I can find is from Amazon UK, and I can't wait for it to arrive. I was thrilled to find this site and hope to be able to contribute in due course, as well as benefiting from the knowledge of other members - long may it continue. Best wishes for 2011, Al.
  • Welcome Al! Glad that you'll be contributing your some of your experience to s95site!
  • Hi Al, fellow Englander! my S95 was a surprise for my birthday in November and was just SO excited when I opened my box from Amazon, I had made some noises about this fantastic camera and someone listened :) :)

Look forward to hearing what you think about it.

  • Hi All,
    Just joined.
Have been using my s95 for about a month now.
Really like it -- but would love to talk to others about how to really understand moving back and forth between auto and scn and other modes -- the user manual is not really clear and i sometimes find myself wasting a lot of time pressing menu or disp or func/set and not getting what i want/need. Anyone have any ideas??

    Hi everyone,

I'm from Denmark. Perhaps the first Danish member so far? I got my S95 for my birthday in December. I've had lots of compact cameras, mostly Canon. My previous camera, though, was a Samsung which I have been quite pleased with (very nice colour quality) - once I got used to its touch-screen functionality. Now with the S95 I have to get used to the "old" browse menu functionality again... so far I still find it a bit slow going. For example, selecting among the various modes in SCN you have to scroll through them - in the touch-screen Samsung I got all the options up on the screen with one click and then it was just a matter of clicking on the one I wanted. It was definitely faster.

The main reason I wanted the S95 was to try to get more control, particularly aperture control to get a shallower depth of field for portrait photos. But I'm having trouble getting this to work. I'll post a question later on this specifically.

So far I'm pleased with the camera and I particularly like the low-light/nightshot mode. It seems to give some excellent pictures.

Anyway, I'm happy to be here and hope to learn lots of tips and tricks on using my S95!
  • Hi all,
    I'm from Singapore.
I got my Canon S95 just 2 days ago - the S95's extremely popular here; stores have been out of stock for about a month.

So far, I'm loving the S95, though I felt a little cheated by the beautiful colours on the screen of the camera; the images that appeared on the screen of my laptop were less vivid.

The S95 is my first prosumer point and shoot, so I'm still learning the various manual functions as I go along shooting everything under the sun. :D

Hope to learn lots on this site, cheers!

P.S. More photo contests, please! :)
I like looking at all the entries (and hopefully, I'll submit a few myself...)
  • Happy New Year to all,

I'm close to Chicago, USA. I've had my S95 for about a month now. I'm not claiming any expertise, but I am claiming lots of enjoyment from this little gem ;-) Also from this website! I hope to be a contributor at some point. Not just a consumer.

Good day to everybody. Just got my s95 yesterday as my first camera. I've been enjoying playing with it so far and hope to learn the basics of photography before jumping into to big dslr.
  • I think I bought the last S95 because they became out of stock, at the lower price, everywhere after I ordered!

I'm coming from a Casio EX-S10A so I don't know much about camera settings but i'm learning fast!

I hope to learn much more at this site.
  • The S95 due to its quality lens takes great HD video, much better IMHO than the FLIP and equivalent series. Here is a quick video from the Auto Show with the S95

  • Again, welcome to all!

@billyradio - Nice shots, think I like the Raisin River better than the Volt, though. :) Feel free to start a new thread for new topics by clicking the big red button on the upper right corner.
  • the quality in HD of your video is amazing! I haven't used my video yet, I can't think of anything I want to video yet!

I was stunned to see how good this video was. I didn't buy the camera to shoot videos but this has really made me think again.
  • I bought my S95 a few days ago, and I'm heading out later this week for 2 months in India. In previous travel to India I carried around a Nikon D70 DSLR with a few lenses. I got excellent shots, but it was a lot of weight and bulk to hoist around. As a result, I often left the camera in my room, unused. So on this trip I've decided to experiment with only bringing along the S95. I'm curious about the trade-off I'll experience between traveling with the bulky, highly capable Nikon vs. the minute, remarkably capable-for-its-size S95.

@resclove - Congratulations on your purchase! I'm sure you'll find some drawbacks compared to the SLR; but keep your expectations within context, and the s95 will definitely blow you away! Besides, the best time for photography is when you do have your camera with you... :) oh, I too am going to India in a few months' time...

@S95Owner - Shoot away... and share your pics with us! Looking forward...

Thanks for the warm welcome syf!
  • Hi. I just replaced my beloved (deceased) S80 with the S95. I have installed a Zagg screen protector, my braided metal wrist strap, my Lowepro camera wrap, and I have ordered the Richard Franiec grip and a set of filters with the mount from Lensmate. As a bonus, the lovely leather case from the S80 is a nice roomy fit for the S95 in the wrap. I welcome the extra protection when carrying the camera in my purse as that's where my previous camera broke its' screen. Almost ready to get out there and see what this little sweetie can do! I am quite astounded by the quality of low light indoor photos.

  • @Coldheart: very interested to see what -30C looks like. Put a jacket on and get out there! I mean, er.. welcome to s95site!
  • haha solarshooter, yep I agree, get out there in that -30C :) I am hoping to visit Calgary this year.
