Turning Off the AF Assist Beam
  • "The lamp will automatically light to assist focusing in low light conditions when you press the shutter button halfway. You can turn off the lamp" says the manual. Well I've set this to ‘off’ but it doesn't seem to actually stop working. What am I doing wrong?

If flash is on, red-eye lamp on in flash settings will cause this confusion. If flash or red eye lamp is off no light should show and you may have a malfunctioning camera.
  • Yeah. I checked the red eye. Both are supposedly "off". (I seldom use flash.)

    :( :( Was hoping!

Try, if you haven't, "Reset All".

If that doesn't help, (groping in the dark now), try again, immediately removing the battery for a for a few minutes.

    No result? ..... call Canon.
  • I was interested if other people had successfully made it work - ie turned the AF Assist light actually off.

Well, it turns off on mine via menu and, I presume, on any that is fully functional; it's designed that way. It doesn't seem that you are doing anything "wrong" ... it would seem that your camera is not responding to the setting.

Sometimes there are bugs in programming and things go wrong. A reset will, if it's just a programming bug causing loss of a function, often return a camera to full functionality. (Removing the battery after reset should give a clean reboot.)
