Hello all! Introduction here, my name is Jason and I'm a photo newbie. LOL. I'm one of those clueless point and shoot guys that has always looked at others' beautiful pictures and wondered how the heck they managed it. Well, two weeks ago I decided to do something about it and purchased a Canon S95 and a few accessories, namely a GorillaPod, Lensmate Adapter and Filters and Alexander White's 'Photographer's Guide to the Canon PowerShot S95' book. I had the camera for 2 days before a trip to Thailand. I shot tons and tons of pics. Figured the more I took the better my chances of some good ones. I experimented with many of the camera's features but really wanted to stay away from Auto and Scene modes so the majority of my pics were shot using Aperture or Shutter Priority Modes (didn't even know what they were a couple weeks ago. Some other shots were on Program Mode and a couple on Manual.

I've uploaded a few to Flickr and I'm hoping for a couple critiques. Not looking for praise where it's not due but at the same time don't crush my hopes and dreams either. I'm a fragile new photographer here. Any tips or suggestions to achieve better results or composition are certainly appreciated.

Please let me know what you think. Feel free to link up a pic to your reply if you're making reference to a particular shot(s) so I know what you're talking about.

Thanks!

Here's the link...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/macmanjpc/sets/72157629222325380/

I love the flexibility and compactness of the s95. I do have a question does anyone know if it is possible to instantly view the photo just taken on a monitor screen without actually downloading it to a program then opening that file? I am having a 50th birthday party and was hoping to set up a sort of photo booth in my house but i don't want to have to sit at the computer all night opening the photos is there anyway i can hook it to a computer and have the monitor mirror the image on the camera.
thanks in advance

I like to take photos of little things. Insects, seedlings, miniature worlds.

The S95 is quite a good camera for this purpose, as the large sensor takes in a lot of light and allows the camera to focus on small scenes. It takes excellent quality close up photos with no fuss. There's a defined "macro" mode (and also a manual focus mode), but I've hardly even experimented with these, as it seems that in "auto" the camera will happily focus at the minimum range.

Here's a close-up I shot a couple weeks ago. I've read about this phenomenon but have rarely witnessed it. I looked underneath one of my sunflower's leave to find thousands and thousands of aphids in all life stages. Hordes of ants were walking amongst these aphids, and periodically "milking" them for sweet honeydew. Here's the shot, uncropped (at 2:3 aspect ratio, not full sensor 3:4).

This was taken at the widest lens angle. That is, zoomed out all the way, with the camera held very close to the subject. At this short distance, the focal range is very narrow. You can see the plane of focus follow the curve of the leaf. Everything in front of and behind this plane is suitably blurry. I'd judge this to be a good photo and an interesting look into a tiny subject, ant-aphid relations. But the pocketable S95 clearly doesn't offer huge magnification, not like an SLR rig with a big macro lens.

There's a trick, though, for a more magnified looking picture. The high resolution sensor allows for some cropping to get a closer look. Here's an 1800x1200px crop of the same photo (shrunk to fit the forum). This is still enough pixels (300dpi) for a high-quality print at 4x6".

Now this is a great photo. You can make out aphid antennae, ant mandibles, and the jewel-like abdomen of a honeydew engorged ant.

And just for reference, here's a crop of the photo at full size, using all of the sensor's pixels. (Note that the full crop isn't in the focal plane. The aphids near the center left are at max focus.) A full size crop like this might even look a little nicer with a bit more sharpening on the computer.

Basically, bokeh is the quality of out-of-focus or “blurry” parts of the image rendered by a camera lens – it is NOT the blur itself or the amount of blur in the foreground or the background of a subject. The blur that you are so used to seeing in photography that separates a subject from the background is the result of shallow depth of field and is generally simply called “background blur”. The quality and feel of the background/foreground blur and reflected points of light, however, is what photographers call Bokeh. (from http://mansurovs.com)
I have always been fascinated by photos with the bokeh effect. But have never tried on purpose to achieve good results. My bokeh photos were always by pure luck.
Do you shoot any photos with bokeh on your mind? Or are you just like me, when you go through your photos you say: Oh, there is bokeh!!! :-)
Im sharing an image from a couple of days ago. The spaces between the flowers and shrubs allowed the sun to shine through...giving me bokeh!
Share your images and your insight...:-)

I notice a lot of newcomers to the forum are having a hard time posting pictures on the forum, so I thought I'd compile the known and discussed methods in this thread. Here you can also ask questions regarding the posting of pictures.

Please do not post trial pictures in this thread so we can keep the picture posting tips easily accesible for those who need it!

----------------------------------------Part 1----------------------------------------------------------
For users of Imageshack, Photobucket, Tabulas etc. read this section. for users of Flickr scroll down to part two. Users of picasa scroll down to part three.

This section has been written by forum member Jickers, slightly edited by Hitman.
original text can be found here: http://s95site.com/forum/discussion/comment/832/#Comment_832

1.) Create an account on image sharing website.
ex. : www.photobucket.com, www.tabulas.com, etc.

2.) Upload your image you want to share and make sure the size is not so big.
3.) Copy the "Direct Link" or URL of the image (the link where you can view the image).
ex.: http://images.tabulas.com/123456/m/myphoto.jpg

4.) On the comment box, add this:
Paste the "Direct Link" or URL(pink text) .Don't forget to put the quotation marks!
5.) Don't hit the preview. It returns to homepage for some reason, you cannot preview the image (I dont know, maybe it's just on my computer). Just post your comment and edit it later if there's a typo error.

----------------------------------------Part 2-----------------------------------------------------------
For users of Flickr:

In flickr click: share this (if not available click the little downward poiting arrow next to the facebook and twitter icon, see picture below)

Next select grab Html / BBcode , select the pictures size and copy the complete link highlighted in the box and paste in your post on S95site. (see picture below)

With this method it is possible to use the preview button, to see what your post will look like.

-----------------------------------Part 3------------------------------------------------------
Users of Picasa

I added this part on request since I happen to have a Picasa account.

First go to the picture in Picasa web that you want to share and click on it until you are past the album level and into the picture level.

On the right side (underneath the camera info) you should see the text link to this picture in blue. when you click it it will display some options.

Now select the proper size and tick off the hide album link if you do not want people to go through your complete album.
Finally just copy past the embed image code into your post on S95 site and presto! you're done.

Good luck posting pictures!
